Worldwide, approximately 1 in 20 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, based on IARC’s analysis of 2022 rates. Risk varies across countries and individuals.
Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known family history of the disease.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2026, the Caribbean Association for Oncology and Hematology (CAOH) invites you to turn awareness into action: Notice a change? Seek care. A new lump, breast skin or nipple changes, or unusual nipple discharge deserve medical attention—even without pain.
Ask about screening. Speak with your healthcare professional about screening appropriate for your age, risk and local guidance. If you have symptoms, seek assessment rather than waiting for routine screening.
Be someone’s support. Offer a ride, accompany them to an appointment, listen without judgement, or ask: “What do you need today?”
Every person across the Caribbean deserves timely diagnosis, quality treatment and compassionate care.
